Learn about Oregon’s geography!

Hello my Fabulous Fourth Graders!

Over the next 2 weeks you (and I) will be learning about Oregon and all of its amazing geographical features!

What are geographical features???  Mountains, volcanoes, lakes, rivers, high deserts, forests, grasses, anything that has to do with the land, plants and waters of a given area (in this case, Oregon!).

Your job will be to create a presentation showing what you’ve learned using Google Slides.  When you are done, you get to show the class, and maybe others, what you’ve learned about our amazing state!

You must include least 5 slides (one for your title page, one for the places where you got your information-called a bibliography, and at least 3 with information)

A good rule for slide presentations is to make sure you don’t read your slides to your audience and to have only a few facts per screen.  No one wants to read a screen that is so crowded it’s scary!

here’s a great video on presentations

The first thing you need to do is explore these sites and see what interests you.  When you do find what you think you want to learn more about, head over to our Google Class and create a slide in the assignment named “Oregon Geography Slideshow.”

Now, let’s get started!

(Psssst…. Don’t forget to be thinking about what you can present!  You should consider taking notes as to which site you found something of interest, and the fact that you found interesting.)

Welcome to my 2015-16 students and their families!

First Student #132

I am so excited to meet you and for us to create an amazing learning family!  If you are reading this it is because you received my letter with this blog’s url.  I hope to use this website as a way to communicate about classroom events,  upcoming projects and any fun or important information you need to know.  Over the course of the year I  will be adding more posts about us, but until then, have fun searching around and seeing what I used to do.  Some of the links may not  work anymore, but I am not going to fix them because I no longer am in Nashville,  nor a Librarian.

Now, I am a Teacher.  I am back to my roots, back to the classroom and having a blast preparing the room, but I’m not posting pics yet because I want you to be surprised.

One thing I think you will like is that I have a very active class.  I try and get you up and moving many  times during the day so that you enjoy  your learning.  Please know, however, that moving and activity does not mean misbehavior.   Our first weeks together will help you understand what’s expected of you as a student in our classroom.

One real exciting thing about this blog is that you will be able to add to it!  Yep, you get to write a blog!  Don’t worry, we will go through it together and before long, you will be a pro!

Anyway, I’ve got 2 weeks to finish getting ready for you.  I hope you are getting more sleep than  me!

Back in the classroom!

I am so excited for this, my final leg of my career.  I’m heading back to the classroom and couldn’t be happier!  For the last five years I have served in leadership positions–Reading Specialist, Literacy Leader/Educational Coach, and Librarian–and now I am going back home, back to what I know best and the environment in which I thrive.  My new venture is a grade I’ve never taught (if you can believe there are any!), fourth!

Why, you may ask, do I call it “my final leg?”  That would be because I have learned a lot about myself and that I’m not a get in front of colleagues and teach kind of gal.  My preference for a leadership position is to lead from behind, that which I was able to do as a Librarian.  In fact, my 3 years serving as the Librarian were highly successful, I can’t say that about the other positions.  The only spotlight I am comfortable in is the one shining next to a students desk as I stoop down to help as needed.  Therefore, unless a certified Librarian position becomes available in this district, I will be finishing up my career in the classroom…in about 10 years!

The Queen’s Gambit

Okay, not exactly middle school material, but I’ve got to get my fill of historical fiction…especially ol’ King Henry VIII.  I’ve read many books of this era and loved them all.  This one kept me going to the end (that doesn’t always happen in other genres) and of course, researching some of the facts as I went along.  I never realized that Katherine (spelled with a “K” in this book) wrote lamentations and other works for publication.  If you’re interested, I’ve linked them below.  Anyway, definitely a book for the adults–the love scenes depict a little “rough love.”
